A Quantitative Model of the Functional Architecture of Human Striate Cortex with Application to Visual Jllusion

چکیده
Anato~llical and physiological data from lower primates, and psychophysical data from hun~ans, is used to construct a quantitative model of the local and global map structure (functional architecture) of human striate cortex. A series of successful estimates deriving from this model are reviewed. including a prediction for the width of human ocular dominance columns, which has recently been verified. A variety of perceptual phenomena are then discussed. from the point of view of cortical, rather than retinal, topography. It is suggested that the striate cortex may be viewed as a "cyclopean retina" whose non-linear map structure. su~nrnarized in terms of a concatenated complex logarithmic pattern, suggests insights into the nature of the Mackay complimentary image, the Frazer spiral, fortification illusions, and the relationship of the second order statistics of a visual stirnulus to pre-attentive (textural) segmentation. Finally, the nature of nuuronal representation is considered in the contest of recunt models of perceptual and cognitive fiinction. I t is suggested that rinatomical re-m:~pping at successive stages of the CNS may provide a conceptual a1 ternative to conventional single cell and connectionist models, and offers a viable approach towards "ficld" theory of vision.

An fMRI study of human visual cortex in response to spatiotemporal properties of visual stimuli
ABSTRACT Background: The brain response to temporal frequencies (TF) has been already reported, but with no study reported for different TF with respect to various spatial frequencies (SF). Materials and Methods: fMRI was performed by 1.5T GE-system in 14 volunteers during checkerboard, with TFs of 4, 6, 8 and 10Hz in low and high SFs of 0.5 and 8cpd. Results: Average percentage BOLD signa...
متن کاملRepeatability of Detecting Visual Cortex Activity in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Introduction As functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is too expensive and time consuming, its frequent implementation is difficult. The aim of this study is to evaluate repeatability of detecting visual cortex activity in fMRI. Materials and Methods In this study, 15 normal volunteers (10 female, 5 male; Mean age±SD: 24.7±3.8 years) attended. Functional magnetic resonance images were ob...
متن کاملThe application and development of graph theory through the space syntax method: The implementation of analytical practical model in architecture
Abstract Over the last few decades, different mathematical methods have been used to design and analyze architectural spaces. Meanwhile, the graph theory provides an abstract model to study the spatial configuration, so that a simple and flexible mathematical framework is obtained to analyze the spatial topological features and their relationship with social and functional concepts in architec...
متن کاملComputational anatomy and functional architecture of striate cortex: a spatial mapping approach to perceptual coding.
The spatial inhomogeneity of the retino-striate syslem is summarized by the vector cortical magnification factor. The logarithm of retinal eccentricity provides a good fit to the integrated cortical magnification factor. Under the assumption that the cortical map is analytic (conformal), this implies that a complex logarithmic function of retinal coordinates describes the two-dimensional struct...
